Environmental Fireplace

For consideration...

This isn't "my idea", I found it on the next several years ago. It's an Environmental Fireplace made from a 1 gal metal thinner can. Real simple and works too. The metal sides support a small grate and the sides reflect the heat upwards. It's good on canoe trips, too heavy for backpacking. I have wanted to make one from a quart can someday.

I sort of like this version from almost the same materials.

That's more like a stove. The chimney looks oversize for the firebox though, 3" would be enough.

Very nice use of available materials. Sure is a functioning unit. Easy to find the grille part at thrift stores. It's nice for long twigs, user friendly :D

The grille looks more like a piece of a refrigerater shelf than a grill. Serves the same purpose. Well used unit. ;)

Zactly. Before any scientists get started I burned it off in a big fire before using it. (Heavy metal poisoning...)

Here's my idea for the same thing using different materials. Don't ask me how i came up with this I thought of it after reading this thread. Take one of those metal collapsable vegetable steamers the ones that expand to something like a radar'/satelite dish and colapse to a domed metal thingy. Keep or remove the center bar Use bicycle spokes to make a pot stand. I'm thinking 3 all bent in a Upside down U shape or maybe I should say an H with the uprights removed. conect the corners of the 3 bent bicycle spokes and set them on top of the steamer tray. instant Enviromental Fireplace with removeable pot stand. If you leave the center stud in the steamer tray your Pot stand will have to be at least that high if not a fraction higher unless you pot is concave like the bottom of a Heinipot. Just an idea. I will try it out for my self as soon as I acquire one of those metal steamer tray thingys.

I thought a Grilliput was one of those portable grills that you had to screw together and broke down to a piece of tubing. When did they come up with this? Never seen it B4. When ever I get a good idea someone already did the dang thing WT_? Oh well! Hey my version costs less anyway, you can probably get one of those steamer things for free at the church rumage sale definately for under a buck tag saleing and thrift store shopping! Only difference the steamer tray is full of little hole not solid and shiny like that grilliput thing. Any one got one of these? would a small triangular pot stand in the middle work well with a pot of ?" diameter?

Every young "Scotsman clad in kilt" should have one. :D
But if you notice, it's exactly the same size as the steamers. As in not very. I suppose you could get a small bed of coals going in it and fold up the "petals" into it's own potstand. The advantage then of the steamer would be that you could stick a nail or tent stake (or three) through the holes to anchor it in the folded position.
