i often rig a tarp over my cooking area, or in front of my tent.
Shug's Prusik knot system is almost identical to mine.
my tarp goes over the ridgeline, and i use the Prusik loops to adjust where it lays on the ridgeline. and then to tension it.

That's what I'm talking about; music to my ears. Are you still considering a Blackbird?

since you asked so nicely, sure!
the pic is pretty self-explainatory. the white Prusik loop will slide along the green ridgeline as long as there is no tension pulling on the 'biner end. tension locks it in place. the black loop represents the d-ring on the tarp's ridgeline.

Appears it's a looped cord that has been wound a couple times..then the other end of the loop put through it and to the carabiner?..or is the carabiner's loop put through the other loop a couple times?..does it matter?
If the clouds are so thick you can't see the top of the mountain from the bottom..what the heck makes you think it'll improve the other direction!Realityguy

the white cord is one continuous loop. it is passed around the ridgeline and through itself three times.

look at this animation:

Glacier climbers use these for self rescue if they fall into a crevasse. When traveling across a glacier, you rope up to 2 or 3 other climbers. If you fall into a crevasse, you hope the other guys stay top side. Then you can use two prusik loops to stair step up the rope to get back out. I took a mountaineering course years ago and we took turns being lowered into crevasses on the Nisqually glacier on Mount Ranier. Under controlled conditions this was actually a pleasant experience. You really have to trust your rope team tough.

i'm not a climber, but i read somewhere that a better knot to use to ascend a rope is a tautline hitch. not as easy to tie as the prusik or klemheist, but supposedly a safer knot. i've tied the tautline at home, but never used it in the field. it's a little harder to move than the prusik. of the three travelling knots mentioned, i prefer the prusik, but, like i said, i'm not a climber.
